Teluk Awur is famous for its cultural products in the form of carvings and typical batik that welcomes the coastal spots. The nuances created from these cultural products are by the location of Teluk Awur which is one of the identities of tourism in Jepara Regency. Located in Tahunan sub-district, Jepara Regency, Teluk Awur is starting to become a tourism destination that the local government is paying attention to.

Seeing this potential, the Research Team from the Indonesian Literature Study Program, FIB UNDIP, chaired by Prof. Mudjahirin Thohir, M.S. also take projective steps. By taking an economic point of view by cultural formation, the team consisting of 4 academics made a social visit to Teluk Awur on 3 – 6 October 2022. The four academics are Marta Widyawati, S.Hum. M. Hum., Fajrul Falah, S. Hum. M. Hum., Siti Komariya, S.S. M.A., Yuniardi Fadilah, S.S. M.A., Herpin Nopiandi Khurosan, S.S. M.A.

With an intimate approach through direct meetings with the craftspeople and those who have experience in cultural matters, the research team spent 4 days in Jepara. On October 3, 2022, a general sample was taken which was then processed in more detail on October 4-6, 2022. After meeting directly with people who experienced the cultural process directly, several important views were obtained that could give feedback to the local community.

Carvings from Jepara are products of old and long-lived coastal culture. It’s just that there is no special attention, either in collaboration with the government or non-governmental organizations. Therefore, there have been several tidal periods in terms of the carving craft production process. Many people who are unable to face the ups and downs have to divert their livelihoods. However, there are not a few people who consistently dare to face the ups and downs of the creative economy which later gain success.

One example of creative actor who still survives is Abdurrochim. This middle-aged man can consistently create carvings that even have an exclusive identity. Abdurrochim admitted that his carving creations have an unbroken flow and the smaller they are, the more detailed they are. The patterns of flowers, leaves, and some of their ornaments can be likened to a stream that doesn’t stop at a certain point.

The existence of creative actors such as Abdurrochim became one of the milestones in the final results of the research team of the Indonesian Literature Study Program FIB UNDIP. The existence of a proposal process to the Jepara Regency Government regarding the construction of a special room in the form of a gallery and an economic space became the application of this research. In the future, there is hope that an exhibition space for the creations of the Teluk Awur community will be built which will be more accessible to a wider audience. At the same time, it is necessary to continue with the development of tourism in Jepara in the future.

Head of Indonesian Literature Study Program, FIB UNDIP, Dr. Sukarjo Waluyo, M. Hum., sees this research activity as an intellectual and devotional process at the same time. It is proven that Prof. Mudjahirin Thohir, M.S. does not stop his research on the academic table, but also connects the tongue of development with the local government. (Hamdan)
