Rahmawati Hidayah, known to everyone as Rahma, is a student of Indonesian literature specializing in linguistics. From a young age, Rahma has shown a deep interest in the study of language and how it plays a role in human life. This interest led her to focus her undergraduate thesis on the relationship between linguistics and psychology, particularly in the context of mental health. Rahma realized that mental health is strongly influenced by the language we use on a daily basis. As the main tool of human communication, language has enormous power to influence a person’s feelings and mental state. In her research, Rahma examines how words and phrases used in social interactions can create pressure or even provide emotional support for others.
According to Rahma, the impact of language on mental health cannot be underestimated; for example, negative or critical words can cause stress and anxiety in those who receive them. Conversely, positive and supportive words can have a calming effect and improve mental health. The language we use in our daily communication has the power to shape our perceptions and emotions,” said Rahma in one of her interviews.
Being a linguistics student, Rahma says, has its ups and downs. On the one hand, there is the excitement of learning how language works and how it affects the human mind. Rahma enjoys every process of analysis and research she does, discovering linguistic patterns related to psychological aspects. On the other hand, there are challenges in explaining to people outside her field the importance of linguistic studies in understanding mental health. Sometimes it’s hard to get people to understand how closely language and mental health are linked,” she says. But these challenges do not dampen Rahma’s spirits. For her, her research is not just an academic contribution but has the potential to bring practical benefits to many people. With a better understanding of how language affects mental health, Rahma hopes to help create healthier communication strategies and support people’s mental wellbeing. Rahma is a living example of how interest and dedication in linguistic studies can open up new insights and make a positive impact in the field of mental health. May her research continue to grow and make meaningful contributions to academia and society at large.
