The BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) course program organized by the Indonesian Literature Study Program, Faculty of Humanities (FIB), Diponegoro University (UNDIP) is open to students outside the Indonesian Literature study program, and can even be taken by students participating in the Merdeka Campus Program. The BIPA course not only teaches language, but also knowledge about Indonesian culture.

The Head of the Indonesian Literature Study Program at FIB Undip, Dr. Sukarjo Waluyo, S.S., M.Hum., said that there are two BIPA programs. The first is a course for Indonesian Literature students. The second is BIPA for foreign students studying in Indonesia under a cooperation program with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

BIPA for foreign students organized by FIB Undip is the result of collaboration with the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Apart from Undip, several other campuses also have similar programs, so the number of participants is in line with the number of scholarship program participants.

Even so, BIPA is one of the flagship programs of FIB Undip. He hopes that BIPA will become one of the pillars in realizing the Indonesian Literature Study Program at FIB as a center for Indonesian language and culture learning for foreign speakers. “We want to provide quality Indonesian language learning for foreign speakers and introduce Indonesian arts and culture to foreign speakers,” he said.

In the context of the Independent Campus Program, where students from outside the study program, as well as from other universities, study here, it is reported that the BIPA course carries a weight of 2 credits. In this program, students are equipped with the ability to teach Indonesian to foreign speakers. Currently, Undip has established agreements through the Merdeka Belajar Consortium (KMB) with Padjajaran University (Unpad) in Bandung and Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar.

As a course, BIPA not only equips students with the ability to teach Indonesian to foreign speakers, but also provides knowledge about Indonesian culture. Meanwhile, BIPA for darmasiswa, which has been organized by language service institutions since 2000, has two levels, namely basic (elementary class) with a course duration of 100 hours, and intermediate class. The levels are optional, but program participants are advised to start with the basic level first.

To maintain its quality and relevance, the BIPA teaching module at FIB Undip is continuously refined and updated. BIPA for international students is a program for learning Indonesian language skills, including speaking, writing, reading, and listening, intended for foreign speakers.

BIPA is part of an effort to promote the Indonesian language internationally, and as such, the program receives support from the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikdasmen). At least 45 countries are interested in and support their students learning Indonesian. In addition to language, foreign students coming to Indonesia are also interested in learning about art, culture, cuisine, and tourism.
